Wood construction award for Weissache nature quarter

proHolz Tirol, together with the Chamber of Civil Engineers | Arch+Ing Tirol and Vorarlberg, awards the Holzbaupreis Tirol every four years. The Naturquartier Weissache in Kufstein receives recognition for its exemplary use of wood.

The so-called «Naturquartier Weissache» is the largest residential building in Tyrol and a good example of how timber construction has developed in recent years. «Wood is a renewable and regionally available raw material. Especially in times of climate crisis and not least because of Corona, the importance of domestic materials and short transport routes is increasing,» says Josef Feichtner, Managing Director Unterberger Immobilien. The natural building material receives top marks not only for the aesthetic design possibilities and the comfortable atmosphere, but also in terms of thermal insulation, energy efficiency, fire protection and durability.

Built in record time

Project manager Florian Huber sees a further advantage in the shorter construction time: «We were able to build the wooden shell including windows, balconies and facade in just ten weeks. Thanks to prefabricated timber elements, the construction phase was shortened by six to seven months compared to conventional construction methods.» In this showcase project, the building material wood is not only used for the construction of the building and for the façade, but is also used in the interior, partly visibly in the ceiling and wall areas. Environmentally friendly materials and sustainable construction solutions bring the total of 34 condominiums the highest quality standard «klimaaktiv Gold».

Staircase and elevator shaft made of wood

In Austria, escape routes from buildings such as the Naturquartier Kufstein must meet the REI 90-A2 requirement. This means that the escape route must be safe for 90 minutes in the event of a fire and be made of non-combustible materials. «Thanks to a fire protection concept that provides for fire protection planking of all components in the escape route, it was also possible to build the staircase and the elevator shaft in wood,» explains Tamir Pixner, Managing Director of Timbatec Vienna.

The elevator shaft and the staircase are made of wood thanks to ingenious construction.
