Primary school and kindergarten, Mettmenstetten

The project
To expand the school space in Mettmenstetten, a two-story primary school and kindergarten with a floor plan measuring approximately 13 m x 40 m was constructed using timber. The two-story building does not have a basement. It has a height of approximately 7.8 meters and is designed so that an additional story can be added. The entrance area is covered by a supported single-story canopy. The building contains four classrooms with their respective group rooms, one staff room, four storage rooms, two technical and cleaning rooms, toilet facilities, and an elevator. Timbatec was responsible for the timber construction, fire protection, and solid construction planning.

The construction method
Every 2.6 meters, joists span two fields and also form the canopy against the soccer field by means of a cantilever. Cross-laminated timber ceilings are inserted between the joists. The joists stand on supports and are thus partially decoupled from the walls. The walls were constructed as timber frame walls, which also ensure the bracing of the building. The stairs, the vertical escape route, and the elevator shaft were constructed as encapsulated cross-laminated timber elements.

The challenge
Timbatec was commissioned at the end of 2023. The tender for the timber construction was issued at the end of May 2024, and construction began in January 2025, so that the school could start operating after the 2025 summer holidays. Planning and coordination had to be carried out in this short period of time, while always taking into account the possibility of a later extension.
